The talent war within life sciences is very real, and 2022 is shaping up to be the most challenging year yet. With the hiring that’s taken place over the last two years, many people within the space have already moved to new roles, are being retained by their current organisation or simply aren’t looking to make a move.

It may be someone else’s role to work on the company EVP and attract talent into your organisation, but you can have a considerable part to play in ensuring you’re building a strong team too. I’ve worked closely with a VP of Engineering over the past two years to help them secure the talent for eight business-critical positions within their team. They take personal responsibility for making sure their business-critical vacancies are filled and take time out of their busy schedule to work with me so I can do my job efficiently.

What can you do to build your team in this hyper-competitive space as a hiring manager? Working closely with the right Recruiter/Head Hunter can be the difference between success and failure. You can be successful even if the rest of your organisation isn’t. I wrote a poem called “The Perfect Hiring Manager”, which will give you an insight into precisely what you can do to gain an advantage over some of your competitors. It goes like this…

The perfect hiring manager understands my value.

Knowing that working exclusively with an industry specialist is the right thing to do.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.

The perfect hiring manager makes time for me.

Knowing that giving me a detailed understanding of their requirements will mean they get the talent they need.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.

The perfect hiring manager makes time for me again

Knowing that weekly calls and open communication are crucial to success.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.

The perfect hiring manager is responsive and moves fast

Knowing the market is busy, candidates have many choices these days.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.

The perfect hiring manager sells to the candidates

Knowing they need to stand out from their competitors.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.

The perfect hiring manager makes the right offer, first time

Knowing that stating with a low offer makes the candidate think they are not valued.

They play their part; it’s not all on me.
